The Kotel Belongs to the Jewish People • Statement on the Proposed Bill Regarding the Egalitarian Kotel

A bill being advanced in the Knesset that would place the Egalitarian section of the Kotel under the authority of the Chief Rabbinate and impose severe penalties on those who do not conform to its standards is not an abstract debate. It directly affects pluralistic Jewish communities in Israel and across the Diaspora.

Today I feel a moral and spiritual obligation to express my deepest rejection of the bill advanced by Avi Maoz, approved today in the Knesset by 56 votes to 47, granting authority over the egalitarian section of the Kotel to the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and imposing a penalty of up to seven years of imprisonment for those who do not conform to its standards.

The Kotel does not belong to one sector. It belongs to the Jewish people.

At decisive moments for the spiritual and democratic character of the State of Israel, silence is not an option.

This legislation compels us to ask what kind of Jewish state we seek to build. Israel was established as the national home of the entire Jewish people. It cannot become a state in which only one interpretation of Judaism enjoys official legitimacy.

The Kotel is a symbol of memory, hope, and continuity. The prophet Isaiah taught: “כי ביתי בית תפילה יקרא לכל העמים” — “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples” (Isaiah 56:7). How much more so must it be a house of prayer for all Jews.

Our tradition does not merely tolerate diversity — it celebrates it. The Midrash teaches: “שבעים פנים לתורה” — “The Torah has seventy faces” (Bamidbar Rabbah 13:15). This is not relativism; it is depth. The Divine word is broader than any single interpretation. 

The Talmud proclaims: “אלו ואלו דברי אלוהים חיים” — “These and those are the words of the living God” (Eruvin 13b). Multiplicity strengthens Judaism; imposed uniformity diminishes it.

The Masorti Movement and liberal Jewish movements represent millions of committed Jews rooted in halakhah, learning, spirituality, and ethical responsibility. We pray with women reading Torah. We build egalitarian communities. We educate toward human dignity. We are an inseparable part of the Jewish people.

A strong Israel is a democratic Israel. A faithful Israel is a pluralistic Israel.

Therefore, I call upon liberal Jews around the world — in Israel and the Diaspora — to raise their voices and join our struggle for a democratic and pluralistic Israel that respects all expressions of Judaism with equality. This is not a struggle against someone; it is a struggle for Israel’s soul.

May the Holy One grant wisdom to our leaders and expansiveness of heart to our society. May we remember that “דרכיה דרכי נעם” — “Her ways are ways of pleasantness” (Proverbs 3:17).

We will continue to pray. We will continue to teach. We will continue to build.

And may the day come when the Kotel truly symbolizes unity for all Israel.

Hoy me veo en la obligación moral y espiritual de expresar mi más profundo rechazo a la propuesta de ley impulsada por el miembro de la Kneset Avi Maoz, aprobada hoy en la Kneset por 56 votos contra 47, que otorga autoridad al Gran Rabinato de Israel sobre la sección igualitaria del Kotel y que establece una pena de hasta siete años de prisión para quien no mantenga una conducta conforme a las pautas del rabinato ortodoxo oficial.

El Kotel no pertenece a un sector. Pertenece al pueblo judío.

En momentos decisivos para el carácter espiritual y democrático del Estado de Israel, no podemos permanecer en silencio.

Esta legislación nos obliga a reflexionar sobre qué tipo de Estado judío queremos construir. Israel fue concebido como hogar nacional de todo el pueblo judío. No puede transformarse en un Estado donde sólo una interpretación del judaísmo tenga legitimidad oficial.

El Kotel es símbolo de memoria, esperanza y continuidad. El profeta Isaías enseñó: “כי ביתי בית תפילה יקרא לכל העמים” — “Mi casa será llamada casa de oración para todos los pueblos” (Isaías 56:7). Cuánto más debe ser casa de oración para todos los judíos, sin distinción de corriente, género o práctica religiosa.

Nuestra tradición no sólo tolera la diversidad: la celebra. El Midrash enseña: “שבעים פנים לתורה” — “Setenta rostros tiene la Torá” (Bamidbar Rabá 13:15). No se trata de relativismo, sino de profundidad. La palabra divina es más amplia que cualquier interpretación única. Cada generación, cada comunidad, descubre un nuevo rostro de la Torá viva.

El Talmud proclama: “אלו ואלו דברי אלוהים חיים” — “Estas y aquellas son palabras del Dios viviente” (Eruvín 13b). La multiplicidad de voces no debilita al judaísmo; lo fortalece. La uniformidad impuesta lo empobrece.

El Movimiento Masortí y los movimientos judíos liberales representan a millones de judíos comprometidos con la halajá, el estudio, la espiritualidad y la responsabilidad ética. Rezamos con mujeres leyendo la Torá. Construimos comunidades igualitarias. Educamos hacia la dignidad humana. Somos parte inseparable del pueblo judío.

Israel fuerte es Israel democrático. Israel fiel a su tradición es Israel pluralista.

Por ello, invito a todos los judíos y judías liberales del mundo —en la diáspora y en Israel— a elevar su voz y unirse en nuestra lucha por un Israel democrático y pluralista que respete todas las formas de expresión del judaísmo con igualdad. No es una lucha contra alguien. Es una lucha por el alma de Israel.

Que el Santo Bendito Sea conceda sabiduría a nuestros líderes y amplitud de corazón a nuestra sociedad. Que recordemos que “דרכיה דרכי נועם” — “Sus caminos son caminos de dulzura” (Proverbios 3:17).

Seguiremos rezando. Seguiremos enseñando. Seguiremos construyendo.

Y que llegue el día en que el Kotel sea verdaderamente símbolo de unidad para todo Israel.
